The Way To Be Counted Among The Wise

[20] “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.” — Proverbs 19:20 NIV

In my few years serving the Lord, I’ve seen how many people crave knowledge in good and evil ways. Some people read books, listen to podcasts consistently and watch YouTube videos just to broaden their minds. But as children of God living in an information-saturated world, should we merely learn anything? No!

The Bible tells us to get wisdom, and in all our getting (wealth), we should get understanding (see Proverbs 4:7). So godly wisdom is a priority to God for us because it’s helpful for us to walk in His ways.

But Solomon didn’t tell us how to be counted among the wise in Proverbs 4:7. In Proverbs 13:20 NIV, he said,

“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

From that, mingling with wise friends is a way to be counted among the wise. Right? But what do these kinds of people do to turn the fool around them to be wise? That’s what has been written in Proverbs 19:20.

  1. They give the foolish person advice.
  2. They correct the foolish person.

Therefore, if you’re privileged to be in a company of wise people, don’t familiarise yourself with them so much that their words don’t impact you any more. If you stop listening to them, you’ll stray from the words of knowledge (see Proverbs 20:27 NIV).

Friend, advise yourself to remain humble when speaking to people which God has ordained to be in your life for your good.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Thank You, Father, for wisdom. Make my heart always receptive to what You tell the wise people in my life to say to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
