The Purpose of God’s Discipline

“They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.” — Hebrews 12:10 NIV

Proverbs 22:15 (NKJV) tells us a truth that has prevailed since time immemorial,

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Every child has foolishness bound in one’s heart. I’m not only speaking about physical children but also spiritual children. It’s hard to physically distinguish between a new convert and an unbeliever because there’s little to zero difference in their attitudes. Babies misbehave a lot. And when they get chastised, they discern the pain rather than its purpose.

Sometimes, this is how we treat God. He chastises us for our training in righteousness, but we see the light afflictions as a distraction to our faith rather than refinement. Love covers a multitude of sins, but it corrects people when they do something wrong. God loves each of us, but that doesn’t mean He shouldn’t chastise us. He has made us holy (Hebrews 10:10) but wants us to share in His holiness (live holy just as He is). So He chastises us when we do something wrong in order to help us manifest His holiness in us. That is the purpose of God’s discipline.

There are wrong things you may be doing now that you don’t even know aren’t right before God. Instead of despising God’s discipline when He does it, ask Him to show you why He does it and what you can learn from your experience. Remember, God loves you.

You’re a blessing.
