Take Your Work Seriously

“One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.” — Proverbs 18:9 NIV

I was shocked when I read Proverbs 18:9 one early morning at the time of this writing. I noticed that Solomon didn’t use the word “job” in the scripture but “work.” Wow! He knew that there was (and still is) a difference between having a job and that of work. Your work is what God created you to do with your divine gifts, known or unbeknownst to you. But your job is what you got trained in educational institutions to do.

Many people are slack with their jobs and don’t labour diligently when their bosses aren’t around. Yet still, they get paid, and the companies they’re working at don’t get crushed. But when it comes to the work done by men of purpose, they’re serious. Such CEOs work even harder than their employees. While the employee is thinking about his paycheck at the end of the month, the employer is thinking of making the workplace systems and structures better.

Reading Proverbs 18:9 again, Solomon says that the one who’s slack in his work is a brother to one who destroys. In other words, the lazy person has a similar lifestyle to that of a destroyer of an entire company. So tragic, right?

Check your life. Do you have people who encourage you to go the extra mile in fulfilling your God-given mandate or those who tell you to put work aside? Be careful of the latter kind of people. Most of those people don’t know what it means to live by divine assignment. Deep in their hearts, they’re not for you.

Indeed, work never ends in this world. The time you’re closing from work in your country is someone’s arrival time in his workplace. So when you’re tired, get some rest and freshen up. But don’t give in to laziness and procrastination to keep you from doing what’s expected of you. I pray that God gives you enough strength to fulfil your divine assignment. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to take my work seriously wherever I go. I press on towards the mark of my high calling in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
