Stay Under God’s Covering

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalms 91:1 NIV

A primary reason why house builders roof their buildings is to provide a covering against rain and sun. Without it, the building will collapse over time. This wisdom didn’t originate from the world but in the scriptures.

When God created man, He covered him with His glory, such that He’ll not be ashamed to do His purposes while naked (Genesis 2:25). But a few verses later, the deceiver came in, pretending to open the eyes of Eve to become like God. Here many of us are, trying to do everything without the involvement of God.

Jesus knew this problem had persisted for generations. So He warned the apostles, and now us, that without Him, they can do nothing (John 15:5). That means, staying under God’s covering to do whatever He has called you to do is for your own protection, not restriction.

Whatever principle God has instituted in His Word for you to follow, simply do it, because it is for your protection.

In a different light, David, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote about how important it is to dwell in God’s covering. It’s written in Psalm 91:1 that “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Saying it differently, anyone who stays under God’s covering will receive rest.

The word “rest” in that verse doesn’t mean sleep. It means “stress-free.” So anything you do under the confinement of God won’t stress you. Why? Because His covering will be all around you to provide strength and protection. But there’s more.

Anything you do under the confinement of God won’t stress you. Why? Because His covering will be all around you to provide strength and protection.

“If you can rest in the shadow of the Almighty,” it means His shadow (covering) is stronger and broader than yours. But in 1 John 1:5, the Word says,

“… God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

A shadow gets only cast when light rays fall on opaque objects. So if in God, there’s no darkness, then His shadow or covering over your life won’t make you blind. It’ll instead saturate your life with immense divine light, so much so that you’ll not miss your providential way in divinity.

Friend, God is wise. Whatever principle He has institutes in His Word for you to follow, simply do it, because it is for your protection. Avoid becoming too busy fulfilling everyday demands that you start neglecting your fellowship with God. That is a subtle way the devil frequently uses to divert people from living in God’s presence.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Oh God, help me to recognise my need for You each day. Build in me the heart that yearns to be intimate with You each day of my life. In the name of Jesus. Amen!
