Overcome Greed

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” — Luke 12:15 NIV

Why is it that many people are not satisfied with what they have? A friend sees another person’s phone and decides to covet it. A lady sees her friend wearing a nice dress, and the next thought that comes to her mind is to steal it or get something more beautiful than what her friend is wearing to prove a point. The problem has one root. And that is, many don’t know what eternal life means according to God’s definition.

One time a man told Jesus to divide his father’s inheritance with his brother. But Jesus told him that he was not a judge between him and his brother. Instead, he was interested in the people understanding eternal life rightly. So he placed a warning that states, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.”

He then added that “life doesn’t consist of the abundance of possessions.” The word “life” in that verse is from the Greek word “zōē,” which means eternal life. That implies the life God gives you when you get saved doesn’t include an abundance of possessions. It is all about divine knowledge (John 17:3), and when that knowledge is abundant, God will bring the provisions you need.

Have you seen there’s no reason to be greedy over another person’s possessions? As a child of God, you only need to focus on following and knowing Jesus. That’s it. You’ll see that He’ll give you all the satisfaction your soul craves and all the provision you need to live a fulfilled life of purpose.

Greed is such a bad thing. Do not fall for it. When you get tempted to envy other people’s things, think of how grateful you are unto God for having what you have now. Give the devil no chance to use your mind to crave material things, which are bound to perish by time.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, I relinquish every thought that stirs up covetousness in me. I receive grace to overcome greed by beholding your promises, knowing and serving You with a grateful heart. Amen!
