Missional Response to Work Demands

“So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed because of His own word.” - John 4:40-41 NKJV

We’re born into a world where work is impossible to skip. Sometimes, work becomes so demanding that we seldom have time for ourselves. There’s one thing I have noticed about work. It never ends. Therefore, it’s better to rest when tired to continue later.

Most of us are taught from infancy to embrace work. However, many of us lack teaching on handling responses to the demands work brings. Hence, we mess up when anything of that sort happens, affecting families and other duties. Jesus, although He didn’t talk much about work, taught us indirectly how to practice missional responses to work demands. Jesus sometimes responded immediately to the demands of the crowd. Other times, He left them to spend time with the Father.

When He went to Samaria, the Samaritans urged him to stay for two days. Then, the next verse says many more believed because of his word. That means Jesus accepted the Samaritans’ demand to stay with them because He knew some people would receive salvation in just two days of His stay. I don’t think Jesus didn’t have another place to go. He did, but He stayed. Sometimes, it’s worth it to go against your regular schedules to do something missional.

When you keep skipping to perform significant duties because of work demands, it’ll be left unattended. Not all days are equal. So when there’s a demand to do something, if and only if it’ll help you or fulfill a part of your divine calling, do it immediately. Don’t just respond to any demand, be missional in your thinking about them before responding.

You’re a blessing.
