Let No Debt Remain Outstanding

“[8] Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” — Romans 13:8 NIV

The only debt that a child of God can never finish paying is love. To us, the believers in Christ, love is a debt, not just butterflies in the stomach or affection towards one another. And since God is love, it means love is a spiritual thing.

Romans 13:8 tells us that we should let no debt remain outstanding except for love. That means two things:

  1. Owe no man anything. In other words, don’t go into debt, especially financially, with people when payment time is overdue. Otherwise, you’ll become a slave to your lender (see Proverbs 22:7). And I feel that is why many people are living with mental torture these days, all because of debt.
  2. Never stop loving people, whether they paid you evil or good for your sacrifices. According to 2 Timothy 3, men will be ungrateful in the last days. And we’re in those days now. Therefore, don’t be surprised that the one you favoured has started gossiping about you. Vengeance is the Lord’s work, not yours. So keep living righteously.

Friends, we owe a lot of love to our broken world filled with numerous wicked people. Let’s choose not to advance the devil’s work of selfishness. But to keep supporting people by the inspiration of God’s love.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, I pray in the name of Jesus. Empower me to live as You want me to, always loving others with or without them loving me back. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
