‘I Am’ Doesn’t Need A Specific Third Word

[33] “And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” — Exodus 3:14 NKJV

When Moses encountered God for the first time, He instructed him to go back to Egypt and make Pharaoh set the Israelites free from that land unit Canaan. Moses was afraid and didn’t know what to say. Because there were several physical disadvantages he pricked himself with. One of such was his stammering lips.

However, I like what he did. Moses kept asking God for more evidence to prove to the Israelites and the king that God was the One who sent him. In Exodus 3:13 (NKJV), he said,

… “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”

He asked God, His name. Then God replied in verse 14 to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” But to the Israelites, God told Moses to say to them, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’

I’ve always wondered why God didn’t add a third word to the “I AM” phrase. I understood later that God is One but multifaceted in functionality. He does many things at the same time. That’s why when you call upon Him in your day of trouble, He’ll be there to defend and deliver you from evil people. And when another person needs Him to fulfil a need, He’ll be there for him. ‘I AM’ doesn’t need a specific third word from us. He’s God all by Himself.

The second thing to note about the “I AM” is this. Attach the third word about Him that confirms what He has said about Himself in the Word. For example, “I Am” is my provider. The moment you keep doing these things, you’ll not trivialise God’s name because you’ll be confessing His promises over your life.

Prayer:

Thank You, God, for showing me in Your Word (Exodus 3:14) that You are the “I Am.” Help us recognise who You are to us wherever we encounter challenges against the manifestations of Your promises over our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
