How to Love In Truth

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” - 1 John 3:18 KJV

The word “truth” as used in 1 John 3:18 means “verity” or “original information.” Only one person has said, “I am the Truth.” And that person is Jesus (John 14:6). Therefore, if we want to understand God’s way of expressing His love in truth, then the only person to study and imitate is Jesus. So the question is, “how did Jesus love in truth?”

We all know Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power to do good and heal all manner of oppressed people (Acts 10:38). But there’s one thing Jesus continued to do to express love in truth. That is, speaking the gospel of the kingdom at all times, whether it appealed to the audience’s demands or not. Sometimes, the same Word He preached to others that made sick people healed was detested by the Pharisees. Do you know what that means?

Loving people in truth doesn’t always suit the wants (not “needs”) of the other party involved, especially when it comes to rebukes and corrections. People want to be loved but don’t want to be corrected when they’re wrong.

As much as God loves us, He never withholds us from receiving constructive corrections. In the same way, expressing the love of God to others, especially to females, isn’t always about gifts, kisses, hugs, sex (in terms of marriage), and words of affirmation. Correction is also part. Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Correct people to help them, not out of reaction to your frustration. Two commodities you can never retain are words and time. Mind what you say, and use your time wisely. Shalom!

You’re a blessing.
