How to Love In Deed

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” - 1 John 3:18 KJV

God is love. Love is not God. That means whatever doesn’t reflect the nature of God isn’t love. And sadly, that’s how our culture has trained many people. Today, it’s sad to say many people don’t know how to express love as God does it.

Scripture plainly explains how believers ought to love one another: in deed and in truth. Today, we’ll be looking at how to love in deed.

But before that, I’d like you to know that the word “children” mentioned in 1 John 3:18 is translated from the Hebrew word “teknion,” which in Christ refers to a new convert or a spiritual babe. So even babes, those who have very little knowledge of God in them, are to express the God-kind of love in deed and in truth. Then it means God’s standards of expressing love haven’t been lowered even for new believers. That is a God of principles. I love that.

Okay, so how can we love in deed? “Deed” used in 1 John 3:18 means “labour” or “work.” So expressing the love of God in deed requires work. However, that work isn’t one powered by human strength but by grace. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:10a that “I am what I am by the grace of God.” Paul loved people and sacrificed his life for the cause of the ministry. But He gave credit to grace for whatever he did, not his human strength.

Friend, it costs to love people in deed. You’ll spend both time and money on them. Love always requires some form of sacrifice. However, when you get inspired by grace to do it, none of these sacrificial acts will be burdensome. In fact, you’d enjoy it as you do them. I pray for your spiritual insight about how to love in deed, through the empowering grace of God, will be opened now in the name of Jesus. Amen!

You’re a blessing.
