Don’t Love Pleasure

“He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich.” — Proverbs 21:17 NKJV

One time, I was chatting physically with a brother in the Lord about families. He told me how one of his uncles spends whatever money he gets on alcohol and pleasures of life and is eventually poor. I was sad, but it didn’t surprise me.

Later on, as I was reading some verses in the book of Proverbs, I came across Proverbs 21:17. And when I gazed at that verse, I was really shocked because it showed me why this brother’s uncle was suffering so much.

Solomon was the wealthiest king in the Bible. And upon all his riches, he tells us that we shouldn’t love pleasure, wine and oil, else we’ll not be rich. If a rich person like Solomon is telling us this, then he’s probably showing us one of the secrets he used to manage his wealth so well, even till the point of death.

On what do you spend your money? Excessively sponsoring pleasure events won’t make you rich because you’ll use money unwisely. Don’t love pleasure, child of God. Know the purpose of money, sow into the ministry, and plant into the lives of others for the gospel of Jesus to reach them. Heaven will give you more in return because of your generosity.

Remember that God didn’t bring you into this world to be happy. Life isn’t about enjoying pleasures. All of them will fade like smoke. It’s only the Word that’ll never pass away. Invest in your personal spiritual growth.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer

Oh God, I receive the grace and wisdom to manage the resources you give me well. Teach me your ways of self-discipline, that I’ll not spend what I earn on the pleasures of life which fades with time like smoke in the air in the name of Jesus. Amen!
