Do What Leads to Peace and to Mutual Edification

“[19] Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. ” — Romans 14:19 NIV

While I was an undergraduate at the university, I stayed with a friend in a room who was not so okay with light bulbs being on early in the morning. He’d get up early, switch off all the bulbs in the room and open the windows. And anytime I’d get up, I would feel the room was too dark this morning. I wanted the lights on.

So it got to a time he didn’t like my way in the mornings. But I told him that it’s not because I don’t want to see sunlight in the morning but simply because I need enough light to at least do my morning devotion before stepping out. He was reluctant in the beginning. But over time, he gave up his ways. He understood his way wasn’t leading to peace and comfort in the room. Later, I read Romans 14:19, and this same principle has been stated there.

As a child of God, people are watching your way of life each day. Because we’re Christ’s witnesses, people will only know God’s ways practically by how we live. That is why we must intentionally do what leads to peace and mutual edification.

In other words, it’s not everything you do that is beneficial to you and those around you concurrently. Sometimes, you’d have to give up a habit you’ve learned from home precisely to accommodate others in your circle. But of course, not the ones that lead you to do God’s ways.

Be intentional about revering God in all manner of your actions. He’ll help you and guide you through.

You’re a blessing.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your love. Empower me to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification, all for the sake of radiating Your glory wherever I go. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
