Delight in God’s Word

“Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.” - Psalms 1:1‭-‬2 NKJV

To delight in something is to take pleasure in it. The Bible isn’t just a spiritual book. It’s also a delightful book. That means it is possible for every Christian to delight in God’s Word. But sometimes, we don’t get what this means. We keep hearing this, “spend time with God’s Word.” But how many of us are taught how to find pleasure in reading and studying it (the Bible) daily.

When I tell you to study the Bible but fail to show you why it is essential to do it and even how to enjoy it, I make it look like a burden for you to use your human strength to do, instead of something enjoyably done out of the heart.

In Psalm 1:1, David mentions the common traits in the life of a blessed person. David says, the blessed person doesn’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly; he doesn’t stand in the path of sinners (don’t get involved with the sinful behavior of people), and he doesn’t also sit in the seat of the scornful (those who mock God). Then in verse 2, he says that that blessed person’s delight is in the law of the Lord, which is the Word.

So from this, when a Christian delights in God’s Word, there’ll be no interest in involving oneself in sinful acts nor moving with those not interested in God. I’ve found this to be true in many Christians I know in my life. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have friends who are unbelievers. I’m saying, unbelievers, are not usually the close friends of Christians whom Jesus is first in their lives.

Your life is too precious to rate it based on what other people think about you.

Is there a secret sin you’re struggling with? Do you want to quit smoking, drinking alcohol, or watching porn? I want to tell you something. The real solution isn’t found in your human efforts made to stop committing all of those sins. If you’re not born again, get help from a Christian to accept Jesus into your life. If you’re born again, replace those times you spend committing those sins with studying the Bible. In no time, your desire to continue sinning will cease.

Do mind the mockers when they see you taking God seriously. Your life is too precious to rate it based on what other people think about you. Delight in the Word of God, and you’ll find pleasure in God.

You’re a blessing.
