Find Comfort In God’s Presence

Probably you’ve encountered several disappointments, unfortunate circumstances, misunderstandings from the communications of people and lack of adequate support, so much so that you’re brokenhearted. That could have also led to you not trusting anybody or believing everyone is wicked. I want to tell you that God is near you, whether you see Him or not, whether you sense His presence or not. Psalm 34:18 (NIV) says,

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

It doesn’t say, “The Lord is close to brokenhearted Christians.” No. That means, whether you’re born again or not, in your broken state, God is so near to you. But for us Christians like me who know how to pray, we have an advantage because we know God will hear us when we pray. However, for unbelievers, it might be difficult because they don’t understand how to connect to God. That’s why such people commit suicide and do all kinds of evil things to themselves, only because they think life is unfair to them.

Let me tell you something very critical. There’s nowhere in scripture that says life is fair. Life isn’t about fairness; it’s about divine knowledge. You’ll pass through all kinds of trials, and even though God isn’t the manufacturer of such ordeals, He’ll use them for your good.

Today, I want to show you three things you can do to find comfort in God’s presence, especially when you’re broken in life. Let’s dive in.

1. Remember what God’s Word says about your problem

The Bible covers every aspect of life. There is a rhēma Word for each problem in your life. When you’re broken, you’ve got to delve deeper into God’s Word to find scriptures of comfort. Maybe, you may not know the location of such scriptures. But you can use search tabs in Bible apps like YouVersion or even Google.

For some time this year in our ministry, we discovered in our site management system that there was a lot of traffic on one of our devotional posts titled “Words of Comfort” when there was a school shooting in the United States. People were looking for hope, and we’re glad our content served them. You can try it too. You may never know how an internet ministry blog will help you deal with your issue. The internet doesn’t contain just harmful content. It includes good ones too. You can get good content there too. Use it appropriately.

2. Get a place to pray alone

I can’t speak about this topic and neglect the power of prayer. We get worried when some of our needs are not supplied, or people disappoint us. But there are two scriptures I always remember to tell myself and share with anyone who tells me they feel lonely. They are James 5:1 and Philippians 4:6-7.

“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.” — James 5:13 (NIV)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

When you are down, depressed and discomforted, read these scriptures, meditate upon them and pray. Prayer won’t draw God any closer to you; it’ll instead make you more aware of His presence because it’s already written in the Bible that God is close to the brokenhearted. Once you become aware that God is with you as you pray, He’ll fill your mind and heart with His peace. You will then be strengthened to move on with what He has called you to do. Life is like a marathon. You can’t do it alone. You need God.

Prayer won’t draw God any closer to you; it’ll instead make you more aware of His presence.

3. Speak to like-minded believers

The last one I would like to speak about is fellowship with other believers. When you got born again, you were born into God’s family of believers. They are the same people who’ll help you when you feel troubled. I understand that not every Christian is mature to understand you. Hence, you’ve got to sectionalise the people you speak with about your problems.

For instance, even though Mary was betrothed to Joseph when she got pregnant with Jesus, Joseph was thinking about leaving her. In other words, Joseph was displeased with her, despite it wasn’t her fault to be pregnant. But to guard her pregnancy, she went to stay with a like-minded woman, Elizabeth, who was also in a similar condition. Elizabeth was very old, but she was pregnant with John the Baptist. So it’s like two godly women, both pregnant, one as a virgin and one as a menopausal woman.

Definitely, Mary didn’t stay there till Jesus was born. But her stay and frequent communication with Elizabeth helped her guard her pregnancy against evil voices and bad human influence.

Man or woman of vision, loneliness, at times, is a part of the cost of following Christ. People may not understand where God is taking you. So be wise. Walk with like-minded people as you pursue your vision. Pray for God to bless your life with a good team and flow with them in prayer and fellowship.
